HEROX editorial note · General examples
A work decision you can start with five minutes
Separate the decision, the missing information and the next attempt when your week is already full.

Name the decision you are actually postponing
‘Sort out my career’ is too broad to tell you what to do on Tuesday. ‘Decide whether to look for a role with fewer evening demands’ gives you a question to investigate. You do not have to settle it during this exercise. The first useful result can be a clearer question.
Try this sentence: ‘I am deciding whether to ___ because ___.’ If you cannot finish it, name the part you are uncertain about: the work itself, the hours, the income, the location or what options exist. A provisional question is enough.
Separate a missing fact from a decision
Suppose you are considering a different role but do not know whether flexible hours are available. Repeatedly asking yourself whether to change jobs will not supply that information. Your next attempt could be to find one vacancy that states its hours, rather than to apply for several roles.
Write two options you are genuinely considering. Under them, write one fact that would help compare them. If several facts are missing, choose the one you could check with the time and access you have. You can leave the rest until later.
Give the first attempt a stopping point
For an illustrative five-minute attempt, the output might be a note containing the decision, two options and one missing fact. Stop at the time you set aside, even if your useful result is identifying information you cannot yet access.
Choose one occasion this week. ‘After lunch on Thursday, I will open a note and name the missing fact’ is easier to review than ‘I should work on my future more.’ If your week has no dependable gap, make the first step smaller instead of scheduling a daily commitment.
Review what became clearer
Did you find the fact? Did it change which option you want to explore? If the attempt was blocked, was the obstacle time, access to information, uncertainty or the need for practical help?
This is a general editorial exercise. It cannot decide whether you should leave a job. A short note can help you name the information and support you still need before making a consequential decision.
